Youth Substance Abuse

How to Handle Youth Substance Abuse

The best practice for dealing with youth substance abuse is to educate the child before they come into contact with the substances that are out there. Children who are able to talk can understand messages as simple as not to touch poison. Children should be taught this as soon as possible. Keep reaffirming the message as much as possible.

It is also important to make sure the practices that are preached are practiced as well within the home environment. For example, do not tell your child to not drink and drive, and then get behind the wheel after a few beers at a friend’s barbeque. This sends mixed messages, and your child is more likely to try the more exciting option that is available, even if it is just out of curiosity.
