Substance abuse is tendency of an individual to use a substance in a way that is not recommended or that is discouraged; the substance is usually not administered by a qualified medical practitioner. It includes the use of illicit drugs like narcotics, glues or paints, jet fuel, steroids and sedatives. Substance abuse impacts greatly on both the mental and physical health of the user and presents a threat to their societal connections too. It was once believed that substance abuse in young people was a problem that only existed in poor, underprivileged neighbourhoods It did not take long to realize this was false information, especially when substance abuse cases were rising in upper class neighbourhoods and schools.
It seems that then people shifted to believe this was an issue to address with their children as they became teenagers. Again, students as young as six years old are now being disciplined for bringing illegal substances to school. This ranges from alcohol, prescription drugs and illegal street drugs. These reports prove that all youth, regardless of age, social status of the family, sex and even location are at risk of developing substance abuse problems.
