The “Why” In Youth Substance Abuse
by Mary on Aug.02, 2010, under Addiction
There are many reasons why the youth experiment with various substances. Some common reasons include curiosity, rebellion and lack of knowledge. One major reason that researchers disagree heavily on for the major increase in youth substance abuse over the last thirty years is that there are more households where there is not a parent present more often. This is due to one parent households and financial issues that require both parents to be out of the home for working reasons. The lack of a parental figure being present in the home allows for the youth to have more time doing things that they normally would not be allowed to get away with if there were supervision. The lack of parenting figures being present also means a decrease in time that is spent education the child on the dangers of the substances that are out there.

Another major controversial issue includes the increase in parents and guardians of the youth displaying substance abuse themselves in front of the child. Children mock this type of behavior in many cases. However, there are also many children who are able to see the devastation that substance abuse can cause within the home and resent the substances as well.
